A Russian MiG-31 fighter jet approached the US plane when a US reconnaissance plane flew around the Kuril Islands, which is a matter of debate between Russia and Japan.
Flight tensions between Russia and the United States over the Baltic Sea and the Black Sea at times moved to the Far East this time.
As the dispute between Russia and Japan over the Kuril Islands, consisting of 56 islands and covering an area of 300 kilometers, continues with an agreement between the Soviet Union and Japan in 1955, Japan wants the islands to be returned to them.
During the day, U.S.-owned B-1B Lancer-type strategic bomber and reconnaissance aircraft conducted reconnaissance flights around the Kuril Islands, while negotiations between the two countries on the islands were still ongoing.
After that, the Russian MiG-31 type fighter jet approached the US-owned plane, preventing it from approaching its borders.
In a statement, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the US-owned plane was made without a border violation and that the intervention took place in accordance with international law.
